Graduate students face food insecurity, unexpected health expenses and other financial challenges while in graduate school. The typical stipend for graduate students at KU is below $17,000 per year. The English Department recognizes these hardships and is working toward raising funding to assist students with financial obstacles. The Department of English has pledged to match any funds raised for this fund up to $10,000. If we meet our goal of $10,000, that would bring the total raised to $20,000.
This fund is created in memory of Justin Hampton, a graduate student completing his dissertation on nineteenth-century British literature who passed away in the spring of 2018. His family requested that donations in his name be used to assist graduate students with financial challenges due to food insecurity and unexpected health expenses. Any contribution, no matter the size, can be allocated toward this purpose.
Thank you to all the supporters so far: we've reached our initial goal of $10,000! With just a little more -- and the English Department matching funds raised -- we will be able fully to endow the fund to ensure Justin's legacy and the assistance the fund will provide extends well into the future. Help us take the final steps to endow this fund!
