The Digital Inclusion Project is aimed at enhancing digital access and literacy for at risk and underserved citizens in our community. An inability to readily and knowledgeably access important digital information negatively affects a person’s health, wellness, education and employment. Through its Digital Inclusion Project, the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications will train selected KU undergraduates to serve as Digital Inclusion Ambassadors. In partnership with non-profit organizations in Kansas and Missouri, these ambassadors will lead digital literacy workshops for senior citizens, low-income families and other at-risk populations helping them understand how to use digital media to connect with their families, medical providers and financial institutions.
We seek to raise $50,000 which, together with internal resources, will enable us to train and support four student Digital Inclusion Ambassadors in each of the next two years. These Digital Inclusion Ambassadors will not only lead workshops but also identify and train four workshop participants to serve as peer trainers. Through this Train-the-Trainer model, it is anticipated that the training component of the program will be largely self-supporting within our non-profit partner organizations after two years.
