Our students have embarked on their medical school journey at a time of transformation for the KU School of Medicine. Major construction projects on our Kansas City and Salina campuses will soon provide modern learning spaces, and we anticipate a needed addition on the Wichita campus to follow. The new facilities are essential to support a medical class size that has grown from 175 to 211 in recent years – a critically needed increase intended to meet physician shortages, especially in Kansas.
Along with new education facilities, we are working diligently on a new curriculum focused on active learning, demonstrated competencies and excellence. Active learning engages students through case-based material with much of the work done in smaller groups. Nobel laureate Carl Wieman describes active learning as “coaching students to be engaged as co-pilots in the quest for knowledge.” We will launch the new curriculum on all three campuses next July.
As you can see, there is a lot to be excited about. We invite you to take a moment and consider how the school has made a difference in your life and how you can now make a difference in the lives of others. The future of our students and the quality of our programs depend on your support.
