Help Us Celebrate Professor Larry Day's 90th Birthday!

Professor Larry Day’s passion for journalism and international travel have inspired generations of students, forged global connections and created lifelong friendships. Larry’s travels have taken him to five continents and more than 50 countries. The Day family’s hope is for study abroad to be the first step on a lifelong journey of discovery and global friendships for KU students.

Studying abroad can be expensive, and many students need financial help. In addition to travel and living expenses, a passport alone costs nearly $200. But, traveling abroad is a priceless experience. As students travel and study internationally, they broaden their perspectives, gain a better understanding of world affairs and experience firsthand the rich tapestry of cultures. Ultimately, the hope is for students to recognize the similarities that bind us together are stronger than the differences that set us apart. Larry has seen some magnificent places, but what he remembers most is the people he met during his travels. Larry says no matter where he was in the world, he experienced incredible kindness and generosity, and he considers himself richly blessed by his friendships with people around the world.

A tenured professor in the KU School of Journalism from 1966 to 1988, Larry also served as director of KU’s study abroad program in Costa Rica during the 1982-83 academic year. He was a two-time Fulbright Scholar, serving as a lecturer at La Plata University in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at various institutions in Bogotá, Colombia. In addition to his academic work, he traveled extensively with the United States Information Agency (USIA) conducting freedom of the press seminars for working journalists around the world. As a working journalist himself, he covered the Argentine coup in 1962, the Falkland Islands war in 1982 and Pope John Paul II’s visit to Cuba in 1998.

Please help Professor Larry Day celebrate his 90th Birthday with a gift to his namesake fund - the J. Laurence Day Study Abroad Award. His family will generously match all donations up to $2,500!
