Every patient we are able to serve is because of you.
The definition of equity is "having equal access." In every facet of human life - whether it be education, finances, healthcare, etc. access to equitable opportunities is the only way to progress and build communities that will last. The Socially Responsible Surgery (SRS) student organization exists to create pathways towards surgical equity for patients from all walks of life through four branches of service: Advocacy, Education, Research and Service.
The KUMC SRS chapter has chosen to serve by tackling surgical inequities at its very heart: by providing free surgical services in a small grassroots clinic in Kansas City, Missouri. The SRS clinic began in the summer of 2023 in affiliation with Care Beyond the Boulevard. Our mission is to provide free outpatient surgical care and healthcare resources for patients who cannot afford or access care. The clinic is fully run by volunteer work from medical students, resident surgeons and attending surgeons, all with the aim of providing high quality impactful care for medically indigent and homeless patients in the community.
Our clinic is open once a month and has addressed cases such as frostbite, diabetic ulcers, wound debridement, lipoma removals and has also served to connect patients with larger surgical resources. The clinic also provides medical students with opportunities to learn about surgical case management while making a lasting impact on the community. The SRS clinic is gaining traction, but we need your help!
With your support, we can purchase suturing and wound-care equipment, which allows us to see more patients and eventually expand the services we provide. As we push forward to improve surgical equity in Kansas City, we thank you for your kind generosity.
