Jayhawk Motorsports | Spring 2025

Jayhawk Motorsports is a student organization which facilitates the design, manufacturing and testing of a formula-style racecar in preparation for yearly competition in FSAE, an annual collegiate design competition taking place at the Michigan International Speedway in June 2025. This unique organization includes students from all School of Engineering majors as well as students from across the university. This year, we have 22 senior undergraduate mechanical engineering students, in addition to a volunteer team of engineering students, business students and more.  

Members of the team spend numerous hours every week designing, manufacturing and testing the cars and components in an effort to maximize their performance. This even includes break time such as fall, winter and spring break, since high levels of dedication and initiative are required to facilitate the production of a high-performance racecar in two semesters. Although the time investment is substantially different than what students are used to in school, the experience and skills gained are what make Jayhawk Motorsports students incredibly knowledgeable and prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation. 

Such a complex engineering project would not be possible without the generous support from our sponsors, who extend the capabilities of the project beyond our resource and manufacturing limits. To produce high-quality and competitive race cars, the project requires a substantial budget, largely consisting of generous donations from both individuals and companies, small and large. Your contributions allow the team to compete at the highest level amongst the best FSAE teams in the world and contribute toward the success of future KU engineering graduates. 

JMS has a very successful history in the Formula SAE competition. In the last decade, Jayhawk Motorsports has achieved 8 top-5 finishes - including two overall 1st place finishes - in the 2012 and 2014 Lincoln competitions. These events include more than one hundred teams from all over the world. Every donation is critical in allowing students to develop technological advances in the FSAE sphere and gives them a hands-on opportunity to apply the skills they learn in class.
