Jayhawk Motorsports Goes Off-Road
Jayhawk Motorsports Baja (JMS Baja) is a volunteer-based club that comes together to design and build an off-road racecar for an annual international competition. Our group is affiliated with the Society of Automotive Engineers, a world renowned engineering association that is at the forefront of transportation technological development. Baja is one of six Collegiate Design Series competitions put on by SAE.
The entire process, from initial design to competition, serves as invaluable experience for underclassmen engineering students. Our team is divided into sub-teams, which each specialize in a particular section of our car. These are Chassis, Suspension, Powertrain, Brakes, Safety & Ergonomics, Manufacturing, Logistics, and Electronics. Having such diverse sub-systems allows students of all majors to gain relevant career experience.
As part of the engineering process, we are always working to improve our previous designs. One of our main goals this year is simplicity. Oftentimes we find that the best design is the simplest and easiest to produce. With this in mind, we aim for a curb weight of 380 lbs which should allow us to place in the top 25 out of 100+ teams from all over the world.
JMS Baja is a young team, founded in 2013. Every donation is important in continuing our team’s success and reaching new heights. Through JMS Baja, students across the university get the opportunity to participate in a large scale engineering project applying what we learn in class to real world situations.
JMS Baja is truly a unique experience that students will carry with them throughout their entire career. Make a gift today to help students achieve success for this year’s off-road competition!
