School of Engineering

Support the School of Engineering.

Your support strengthens the Jayhawk legacy!

Despite the challenges of the past year, our dedicated KU Engineering faculty and staff found new ways to serve current students, recruit future students into the Jayhawk Engineering family and expand our world-class research portfolio. These groups are to be commended for persevering, and we have much to celebrate as we look to the 2021-22 academic year.

KU Engineering Diversity & Women’s Programs will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. The department earned national acclaim when the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) named KU one of 29 institutions across the country to receive an exemplar bronze rating — the highest available classification during the review period. The school has named Elaina Sutley, Associate Professor of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering, as Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging. Professor Sutley will join the program coordinator, Palvih Bhana, in continuing to ensure our students have every opportunity to succeed.

KU secured a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish the Research Experience for Teachers: IDEA-BioE. The project pairs math and science teachers from Topeka Public Schools and participants from KU’s STEMTeach program with School of Engineering researchers. The teachers will develop education modules designed to introduce students to science and encourage STEM-based careers. The project also includes educational interventions addressing gender stereotyping, self-efficacy and other barriers that limit women and minority participation in STEM professions.

Lastly, we are happy to report the School of Engineering played a leading role in the renewal of a key piece of legislation approved by Kansas lawmakers in Spring 2021. Legislators approved a 10-year extension of the University Engineering Initiative Act (UEIA). The UEIA provides KU and other engineering schools in Kansas with significant financial support to increase and maintain the number of engineering graduates needed to meet industry demand.

Your continued support helps us advance our mission and expand our research and educational horizons. Please consider investing in our school with a gift today.

Thank you for your support.

Student Spotlight:

KU’s ability to support me through scholarships is the reason I chose the school. I will be able to obtain my bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with little to no debt, all thanks to KU. The scholarships I have been granted are giving me a head start on life. I have always felt at home here, and KU has given me every opportunity to succeed both academically and financially.” – Elizabeth F., Chemical Engineering 2024
