This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of KU School of Medicine-Wichita. As we reflect on the triumphs and accomplishments and embrace our bright future, I feel deeply honored to serve as the dean of this noble institution. As a member of the medical school’s second graduating class, I share most of its history. The visionary leadership and innovative spirt of our first dean, Cramer Reed, M.D., was the catalyst for building our renowned medical community. We have come far on our journey through the evolution of medical education, community involvement and research.
This is an exciting and dynamic time as innovation and advancements shape the landscape of health care. In the past five decades, we have provided a quality, transformative and collaborative education to more than 2,300 medical school graduates and 2,270 residents. A hallmark of our school, the graduate medical education programs serve the region and state through critical patient outreach.
We continue to expand support for and strengthen health care services to rural Kansas communities. One example of this is our KSKidsMAP program. This program is providing case-based learning to support clinicians as they deliver mental health care to children in their communities. With 95% of Kansas counties underserved for mental and behavioral health care, our KU medical team is committed to help address this gap in unprecedented times.
A healthy Kansas starts here. At KU School of Medicine-Wichita, our mission is to educate tomorrow’s physicians and health care leaders through community partnership to improve the health of all Kansans, wherever they live. Please consider a gift today to support our students and faculty. Every gift is meaningful and has a direct and lasting impact that extends far beyond the boundaries of our school and community.
As we look forward to our 51st year and beyond, we are sincerely grateful and appreciative of your support in our efforts to shape the next half century at KU School of Medicine-Wichita.

Student Spotlight:
“KU School of Medicine-Wichita has provided me with an invaluable, hands-on learning experience throughout my clinical rotations. Attendings, residents and faculty have gone out of their way to make sure I am an active participant in patient care. Learning this way, in an environment where I am supported and mentored as a student, will take me far — both in residency and in my future practice as a physician and teacher.” - Gabrielle F., fourth year medical student
