Support the David Henry Student Support Fund

After more than 46 years of service to the KU School of Pharmacy, David Henry will retire in June 2019. In honor of his long and distinguished service, the school has established a student support fund in his name.

Department of Pharmacy Practice Chair David Henry earned his B.S. in pharmacy and M.S. in hospital pharmacy administration from The University of Kansas. He became interim chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice in November 2010, and chair in May 2011. He was named a fellow in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in 1993 and became a board-certified oncology pharmacist in 1998. His clinical specialty since 1986 has been pediatric hematology/oncology (PHO), working with the KU Hospital team.

Dave has been very active in the Pediatric Oncology Group (1991) and subsequently the Children’s Oncology Group (2000) for more than 20 years, and much of his scholarly activity has been through this association. He has also been active in ASHP, AACP, and HOPA. As a young pharmacist at KU Medical Center, Dave worked both as a staff pharmacist and a clinical instructor. As federal grants became available to help pharmacy schools promote clinical education, Dave developed a clinical service and practice site with the PHO team, the first clinical rounding pharmacy service at KUMC. Throughout the 70s and 80s, when very few pharmacists were involved in physician rounds, Dave was routinely rounding and quietly blazing a trail for others to follow. Today, clinical rounding/services with physicians are considered the standard for pharmacy practice faculty. Over the past several decades, this has proven to be a critical component to the education of health care students and consists mostly of active learning. Dave was using an active learning instruction long before it became popular in the academic setting.

Please help us honor the legacy of Dave Henry by supporting the Student Support Fund.

*Class of 1973 Challenge

Scott Patterson would like to initiate a special challenge to the class of 1973. If graduates of the class of 1973 can collectively raise $1,500 then Scott Patterson will match that amount and donate an additional $1,500 to honor the legacy of David Henry. When making your gift, please indicate in the comments if you are a 1973 graduate.
