Jayhawk Motorsports 2022

Jayhawk Motorsports (JMS) is an organization that competes in FSAE which is a collegiate design competition where students design, build, test, and race formula-style race cars. Each year JMS builds a vehicle with a traditional combustion powertrain. We have made the courageous decision to make the transition to a fully electric car. The switch will prove to be a huge engineering challenge to us, as most of our experience has been with the mechanical components that go into an internal combustion car. This would be the first year that we are not building a combustion car at all. Last year, we took the combustion car to the competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, and were very successful. The entire team grew and learned how to work together, and in the end, we were able to finish 3rd in endurance and 7th overall. Every contribution made to our organization last year was greatly appreciated, and helped us produce our car. We are proud to have this opportunity to fundraise through Launch KU for the 2022 car. 

JMS has a very successful history in the Formula SAE competition. In the last decade, Jayhawk Motorsports has achieved 8 top 5 finishes including two overall 1 st place finishes in the 2012 and 2014 Lincoln competitions. These events include over a hundred teams from all over the world. This year, Jayhawk Motorsports has hopes of another top finish in 2022, with our goal of having a heavy focus on designing a completely new electric powertrain system that has not been attempted by our team before. This year’s team is particularly motivated to meet their financial goals as well, hoping to fundraise their way toward being able to buy the components needed to make this new powertrain system. 

Every donation is critical in allowing students to develop technological advances in the FSAE sphere and gives them a hands-on opportunity to apply the skills they learn in class. Jayhawk Motorsports is a unique organization as it includes students from all engineering majors as well as students from across the university. This year we have approximately 20 mechanical engineering seniors, 2 engineering physics seniors, and 1 aerospace engineering senior working to design and build our car. We are also thankful for the 40 undergraduate students working on our team from mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, chemical engineering, accounting, finance, and marketing.
