John McLendon Leadership Award and Lecture Series
The John McLendon Leadership Award will be given annually to a student in the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences whom embodies all that McLendon represents: persistence, perseverance, and leadership. McLendon, a Kansas native, was the first African-American to graduate from KU with a physical education degree before becoming a legendary coach after being mentored by Dr. James Naismith. “Coach Mac” was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor in 1978 and a coach in 2016. This award and lecture series will celebrate McLendon’s legacy each year.
