Watkins Health Services Patient Assistance Fund

Watkins Health Services Patient Assistance Fund

Watkins Health Services is the student health center on The University of Kansas campus. The health center provides a full spectrum of primary care services, including gender-affirming care, imaging, laboratory, immunizations, and pharmacy services. Located in the same building are the Health Education Resource Office (HERO) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). While the required student health fee covers office visits with our medical providers and most services offered by HERO, students are charged for visits with CAPS, as well as other services offered at Watkins. Most medical services are billed to the student's health insurance, but depending on their network benefits, the services may not be covered or may be applied to a deductible.

We highly discount our services, and most prescriptions are only $8.00 in our pharmacy, but for a student with little to no income, that expense can be a burden. We never want a student to have to decline care or medication because of cost. As a result, the patient assistance fund was created. Students do apply for funding, and once they are qualified, they can receive up to $50 per semester to be credited to their patient balance here. The funds can be used for pharmacy, lab work, imaging, CAPS therapy visits, or any procedures for which we bill. During the application process, students will be contacted by our social worker to see if there are any additional needs we can help them with.

Since starting the fund in late 2021, we have helped more than 100 KU students with their healthcare needs, but we need additional funding to keep it going over time. We are appreciative of donations of any amount!
