KU Rover Club - Science Payload

KU Rover Club is an interdisciplinary organization focused on building the first intelligent rover from Kansas to participate in the Mars Society International University Rover Challenge and other similar competitions. The club provides a framework for engineering students to apply the theoretical knowledge learned in class on practical applications and develop a meaningful depth that would come to their aid in a professional atmosphere. The interdisciplinary aspect of KU Rover Club helps students develop an appreciation for the complexity and collaboration within different majors, that come together in a real-world engineering project.

The University Rover Challenge (URC) is the world's premier intelligent vehicle competition for college students, and our drives club's main competitive goals. Held annually during the summer in the desert of southern Utah in the United States, URC challenges student teams to design and build the next generation of Mars rovers that will one day work alongside astronauts exploring the Red Planet.

Our LaunchKU campaign is focused on raising funds for our science payload, which will extract and test soil samples for life. The majority of this payload is comprised of a Raman spectrometer kit, which utilizes light technology to determine vibrational modes of organic molecules.
