Did you know that History is one of the few majors at KU to offer sustained research opportunities for undergraduates?
In 2024, the Department of History is renewing our commitment to student research through the creation of the Undergraduate Research Initiative to support hands-on experience in archival research, internships, workshops, and conference presentations. A strong research background is what sets KU History students apart when applying to jobs and graduate school. In recent years History students have produced regionally-recognized, award-winning research. Our goal is to establish a renewable fund to which any major or minor can apply for financial support for their course-based research projects. Our hope is to provide all of our students with the opportunity to work closely with historical materials and experience the thrill of discovery.
Even small stipends yield great results. Funding for a tank of gas or overnight stay at an area archive can mean the difference between a solid paper and a project that truly feels like one’s own. Through self-directed research, students gain skills in creative problem-solving, the integration of ideas and empathy for others. Your support ensures that the tradition of student research within the Department of History remains strong.
We are calling on the Class of 2024 to “pay it forward” and help launch the Undergraduate Research Initiative by making a gift of $20.24.
