In two dedicated KU Architecture & Design furniture classes, students will undertake a design challenge to create and build essential furniture for Family Promise's new shelter, Hope House, which provides a safe haven for unhoused families. This project offers students a unique opportunity to apply their creativity and technical skills in a real-world setting. Through research, collaboration and problem-solving, they will learn valuable lessons in teamwork and communication while honing their craftsmanship. As students create functional, stylish pieces, they will gain a sense of pride in their work, knowing that their efforts directly contribute to improving the lives of others.
The benefits of this project extend beyond the classroom. The furniture the students design will not only enhance the living spaces, but also foster dignity and comfort for families in need. Families entering the shelter will receive quality furniture that creates a welcoming environment where they can begin to rebuild their lives. This initiative also strengthens community ties, encouraging local support for both the students and the families of Family Promise.
Moreover, the project highlights the importance of social responsibility and empathy in education. By engaging in this meaningful work, students will develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by unhoused individuals, fostering a sense of compassion that can inspire future civic engagement. Ultimately, this collaborative effort not only empowers students as they build essential skills but also transforms the lives of families in need, making a lasting impact on the community as a whole.
