JayDoc Free Clinic is a safety-net clinic in Wyandotte County that creates invaluable opportunities for medical students at the University of Kansas to enhance their education in the health professions all while providing quality healthcare to the underserved populations of Greater Kansas City. These students are taught they can have a life changing impact on patients.
Three days a week, 50 weeks a year, students are having that impact at the JayDoc Free Clinic. JayDoc is one of the largest student-run free clinics in the country. What sets JayDoc apart is that students are not just responsible for staffing the clinic, but for all decisions, including daily operations, public relations, clinical protocols, electronic records and funding. A peer-elected executive board of medical students works fulltime throughout the year on these and other tasks.
Two nights a month, JayDoc holds a Women’s Health Night. On these nights JayDoc is able to provide prenatal and postpartum care, birth control counseling and other preventive health services to women in Kansas City who might otherwise have to go without. The team at JayDoc is able to provide care for a woman from the earliest stages of her pregnancy all the way through delivery and postpartum care. In 2016, JayDoc is on track to provide care for approximately 60 women over the course of 300 visits.
To further enhance the care the students provide, JayDoc is raising funds to purchase a new sonogram machine. This sonogram machine will allow students to continue to significantly impact the lives of their patients today and for many years to come. Help students continue to make this impact with a donation to JayDoc Free Clinic.
