Educating the Next Generation of Physicians

January 17, 2017

The mission at JayDoc Free Clinic is two-fold: to provide healthcare to those who would otherwise have to go without, all while educating the next generation of physicians. Upon graduation from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, students often cite volunteering at JayDoc Free Clinic as one of the highlights of their medical education. Read below medical students have to say about their experiences at JayDoc Free Clinic.

“It’s really rewarding to know that there is such a great need and that we as students are able to do something to help that need and improve our community.”

“This is a place people can come regardless of their background, regardless of the circumstances that brought them to where they are now…we just ask what is your problem and how can we treat it.”

“I’ve learned a lot of lessons here that I will carry with me when I am a resident and throughout my career.”

For 13 years now, JayDoc Free Clinic has become a crucial piece in so many future physicians’ educations. Help us to continue to provide these learning opportunities for medical students by joining our campaign in these final days as we make one last push toward our goal of $10,000 for a new sonogram machine.

A Patient's Perspective

January 05, 2017

At JayDoc Free Clinic we are continuously inspired by the stories of the patients who walk through our door each night. Read the story of one of these patients below.

"I've been here at JayDoc for two of my pregnancies. I'm pleased with how I've been treated. Everybody is really kind and patient and tries to make sure all my questions are answered. The only thing I would change is having a sonogram machine. Unfortunately, I'm sent elsewhere for that service and sonograms turn out to be somewhat expensive. A sonogram machine would be a great addition to the great work they do."

With just over two weeks left in our campaign we are just over 35% of the way to our goal. Help us to continue to create patient stories and to enhance their patient experience even more. Even the smallest donation can help us close in on our goal of raising $10,000.

The People of JayDoc Free Clinic

Thank you to all who have already contributed to our campaign. In just one week we are already 20% of the way to our goal for purchasing a new sonogram machine to support our Women's Health Night.

Who We Serve

JayDoc Free Clinic works to provide services to the uninsured and underinsured populations of Greater Kansas City. According to our most recent patient demographic surveys, nearly all JayDoc patients are at or below the poverty level and more than 90 percent are uninsured. Furthermore, the majority of JayDoc patients (74 percent) report a total household income of $1,500 or less per month.

Who We Are

In 2015 alone, 353 medical students contributed 5,268 volunteer hours toward the care of underserved patients from across the Kansas City. The physicians who supervise and mentor these students are also volunteers composed of 58 physicians, 43 full-time KU faculty and 15 from the community, who themselves contributed 1,230 volunteer hours.

JayDoc Free Clinic also strives to teach students to work effectively and efficiently with other health professions to provide optimal care to our patients. During patient interactions, student physicians regularly interact with student pharmacists, clinical laboratory students, clinical psychology students, and dietetics/nutrition students.
