From the moment he stepped onto campus in 1992 to his retirement in 2020, Dr. Joe O'Brien impacted countless lives as a professor in the social studies education program at KU. Even though he has left the classroom, he continues to be a mentor and friend to legions of former students, many of whom proudly refer to themselves as "Joe's Disciples."
In 2023, a group of those students surprised him with an award in his name for an outstanding graduating senior in the program and the inaugural recipient, Katie McWard, was selected in the Spring of 2024.
Initially crafted to award $500 to a secondary social studies student for the next ten years, Joe himself agreed to annually donate $500 to the award fund for five years. Our goal is to build a sustainable fund that ensures its longevity and continued support, allowing it to grow and provide this award in perpetuity – carrying forward Joe’s legacy – rather than being depleted in the short term. Please consider joining this effort to support future educators and honor a great teacher, mentor and friend!
